  • Spring

Last week, three yards of dirt were delivered to our back yard so that the property could be leveled out in anticipation of a fence (yay!). I'm pretty sure I had the two happiest boys on the planet. They went out to the dirt pile at 3:00pm armed with buckets (which were quickly filled with water), shovels, rakes, a plastic bulldozer and clean clothes. Six hours later they came inside and required the bathtub to be refilled twice in order to get them clean. Here they are claiming the new land for "America the Great"!

This is the little finch nest that we can see from the living room window:

Here are the builders and occupants (they're kind of hard to see perched on the gutter):

Last week, this is what our little part of creation looked like:

    Then this happened:

The above picture was taken at 8:45am and those are hailstones all over the deck. It's amazing how fast weather can change things! God's creation is awe-inspiring and we are thankful that all things come not by chance, but by His Fatherly hand!

  • About a year ago, Jude found the Discovery Toys Marbleworks in one of my homeschool catalogs and begged for it. He would spend large amounts of time looking at the catalog and imagining the configurations he could build! He was obsessed. Even if I had chosen to spend $43 that way, we didn't have $43 to spend! So, we cut the picture out of the catalog and started saving cardboard tubes (paper towel, toilet paper, wrapping paper) to make our own.

    Here's what we built:

    January 2012 001

The boys were completely happy with the duct tape, cardboard, styrofoam cup, paper plate version of the toy, even though it only lasted two days!

Well, in God's Providence, last week we stopped in to a thrift store that I had been wanting to check out. We looked around a little and the lady working there told us that they are closing in a week and everything in the store was half off. What could be better? A half-off sale at a THRIFT store!! Anyway, after digging through countless piles of stuff (it wasn't very organized), guess what I found?

    003

And, it was on sale for $2.50! It is missing one small piece, but other than that it is intact. I washed all the pieces in soapy water and then put it away for a rainy day.

This morning, Jude was ecstatic to awaken to dreary, cold rain! "MOMMY! IT'S RAINING! WE CAN DO THE MARBLE THING!"

    001 002

I didn't hear a peep for two hours -- they even forgot about their afternoon snack! They learned about gravity, structure, teamwork, sharing, coordination, how to pry stuck marbles out of small spaces... but the best part is that they first learned contentment and making due with what they had. Then, they learned about God's Providence and care for us in giving us even the extra, fun things that we don't need.

  • the joys of boys

I have not been doing very well in keeping this up-to-date, have I? I still have photos from Peter's birthday, our trip to NM, Grandpa and Grandma's visit and Jude's birthday. However, these two boys of mine have been so precocious lately, that I just have to be a little disorderly here and put up a couple of picture from this week

We had our first bicycle accident this week (I'm sure we'll have many more...) Jude took a hill too fast and smacked into the tree at the bottom of it. He was a little banged up and had some bark rash, but only a little cut on his upper nose and a small scrape on his knee. He was actually more upset that he got dirt in his mouth than about his actual injuries!

    002

He has been enjoying his birthday gifts, including a camera and pair of binoculars. He came out of his room today completed decked out to "travel to Florida" with binoculars around his neck, watch synchronized, notepad in one back pocket, camera in the other and one of Mike's old pipes in his sweatshirt pocket "so I can do a little smoking". But first, a snack.

    003

Peter, not to be outdone declared that when he was a grown-up like Jude, he would have monopilars and he would sing the B-I-E-L-B.

  • Christmas Program

The boys were in their first Christmas program yesterday. I was so excited to videotape it for all posterity (yes, I still use a VIDEO camera)! So, I found the camcorder box, pulled it out, charged the battery all afternoon, brought it to church, turned it on during the first song and got the message "check tape". The one thing I had forgotten was a blank tape. Arrgh! And, sure that I would be busy with the video thing, I did not bring my digital camera. I am a horrible mother. All of the kids were so cute. They sang their songs, they said their verses. Peter unraveled the side of his new sweater vest and poked at the girl next to him who was wearing a jumper with a bear on it. Jude policed the poor little boy in front of him and had a ring of red chapped lips. Mike gave a brief devotional about true peace (I think -- I sat with the preschool class and was mildly distracted). The elders handed out Christmas sacks full of candy and peanuts. It reminded me of Christmas programs when I was little and it was nostalgic and joyous and funny and wonderful. And I didn't get it on video.

This is what they looked like when it was all done:

  • Aaahhh!

Yikes, time is flying, every day is jam-packed and we are moving in two weeks!

Every time I suggest we pack another box, I hear groans of, "But I still want to play with that" and "Do we HAVE to pack more?" So, when the idea of packing the puzzles was met with horror, this was my solution: Each boy had to complete ALL of the puzzles for his age level before we put them in the box. It not only kept them busy for a good 25 minutes, but it also ensured that they were pretty puzzled out for a little while. Yay!

    153 154

Then, just to prove our insanity, we decided to take a road trip three weeks before our move. Actually, Mike was scheduled to preach in Ashley, ND and then to act as the M.C. of a charity banquet and silent auction in Minot, ND. So, we packed up (just suitcases this time) and headed north. 155

Our dear hosts, James and Michelle (whom I did not get pics of -- I'm such a bad documenter -- if that's a word) were lovely and we had a great time of fellowship and play time with their adorable son. The boys were even treated to a plane ride for fun!

    164

Then on to Minot, where we got to stay with some of our adopted Minot family and again I was remiss in the photography dept. However, I did get a pic of Peter's first night in a big bed. He was so proud and excited to sleep in the "big boy bed" in "Grandpa and Grandma Doc's" guest room:

    167

From there we moved on to the home of our dear friends and other adopted family, Jim and Sandy, and Mike proceeded to his banquet where he sported his new look: a bow tie.

     171

And, last but not least, the crowning achievement of the week: The boys beat the girls at cribbage. Two nights in a row. There will, of course, be a rematch and Sandy and I will rise again. But for now, we'll let the guys have their glory. Even though we did let them win.

  • Beautiful Autumn!

This is the most beautiful, nice-weathered fall we have ever had in the Dakotas and we are trying to soak up every minute of it!

Raking the yard is hard work:

    005

Look at our great big pile of leaves:

    001

    Ta da! It's really Peter!

    002

Here's the next pile - this one's even bigger:

    003

    Tricked you again! It's Jude!

    004

I can't remember the last time it was nice enough to hang laundry out in October!

    Happy Fall, Everyone!

  • More Peter-ness

During lunch, Peter raised his arm with his index finger and pinky up and said matter-of-factly, "Rock n roll ain't noise powution, Mommy." (I wonder where he learned that, Jaime)

I was joking before supper that I was so hungry I could eat Jude and Peter. During prayer I gasped in pain as Peter bit my thumb. He opened one eye and said, "I'm so hungwy I can eat MOMMY!"

About halfway through his cheeseburger, I noticed Peter had his shirt pulled up and was examining his belly button. "Mommy, if you listen to my belly button, you can hear my food go in my tummy."

There were probably a hundred more, but I'm too tired to remember the rest! He keeps us smiling!

  • The ZOO!

We have been talking about going to the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha for the past three-and-a-half years, but it seemed there was always something more pressing, no time, no money, etc. So, when our friends, Ron and Gail, invited us to go with them, we were rather excited that it was a week where we had no other outside commitments and the flexibility to change Mike's day off. It was definitely worth the four-hour drive! We were there for seven hours and still did not see everything, but the children were almost as tired as the adults by that time, so we called it a day.   Here are some highlights:

The indoor rainforest was one of our favorite parts.

    The butterfly house was beautiful:

The gorilla exhibit was pretty neat, and one of the gorillas "ran" across the enclosure and banged on the window with his fist. I think that was both boys' favorite part of the whole zoo!
